Foods for a Low Fiber Diet

In some cases, cancer patients in treatment experience diarrhea, cramping, or digestive troubles. For these patients, a diet low in fiber is often recommended as it allows the bowels to rest. It’s often difficult to know which foods are high in fiber and which are low, so we have put together this list of some common do’s and don’ts for cancer patients on a low fiber diet. Proteins Low in Fiber

  • Eggs
  • Smooth peanut butter (easier to digest than chunky)
  • Tender meat cuts
  • Fish
  • Tofu
  • Shellfish
  • Ground meats


  • Processed meats such as hot dogs and cold cuts
  • Tough, fatty meats
  • All nuts, beans, peas, lentils and legumes

Dairy Foods Low in Fiber

Some patients find that their symptoms are worse when they eat dairy. Even if you aren’t lactose intolerant, eat only small to moderate amounts of the foods on this list.

  • Milk drinks, including chocolate milk and buttermilk
  • Smooth yogurt
  • Cheese
  • Puddings
  • Sour Cream
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Ice Cream
  • Cream sauces and soups

Breads and Grains Low in Fiber

  • White breads and rolls
  • Pretzels
  • Pasta
  • Crackers
  • White rice
  • Cereals (avoid raisins or dried fruits, seeds, and whole grains)
  • Waffles


  • Wild or brown rice
  • Whole grains or whole wheat
  • Buckwheat (Kasha)
  • Products with corn meal
  • Nuts
  • Coconut
  • Seeds

Vegetables Low in Fiber

  • Vegetables that are tender and don’t have seeds, skins, or stems
  • Potatoes with no skins
  • Strained vegetable juices
