Understanding the Dangers of GranuFlo & NaturaLyte
GranuFlo & NaturaLyte, two of the most prominent substances used in dialysis treatments to assist patients suffering from kidney failure, have been linked to serious, deadly side effects. Although these medicines are designed to help treat acute and chronic kidney failure, they could also increase the patient’s risk of heart attack and other serious cardiovascular problems. If you or someone you love is taking GranuFlo or NaturaLyte, make sure you know the potential dangers and your legal rights.
Kidney Failure and Dialysis
At least 1 in every 10 adults in the U.S. suffers from chronic kidney disease, which could develop into complete kidney failure if left untreated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If someone suffers kidney failure, they will likely receive dialysis as a treatment.
Dialysis is a treatment method that ultimately filters a patient’s blood when their body cannot do so naturally. The process removes the patient’s blood from the body, filters it, and returns it safely. However, when the cleansing solution utilizes too much GranuFlo or NaturaLyte, it could have deadly results for the patient.
About GranuFlo & NaturaLyte
Fresenius Medical Care manufactured and sold GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, which are acid concentrates used to clean the blood of patients suffering from kidney failure. Unfortunately, the dangerous adverse effects of these medicines have since led the U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a recall. The Class 1 recall, the most serious type of warning issued by the FDA, was delivered in 2012 after doctors at Fresenius clinics were notified of the danger associated with the drugs. Unfortunately, the company failed to notify other doctors of the apparent danger and the health risk the medicine posed to patients.
The Health Risks
The risks associated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are extremely severe, as an incorrect dosage could lead to a cardiac episode, which can be deadly. One of the most dangerous side effects is metabolic alkalosis, which affects the blood levels and can cause cardiac arrest, heart attack, and stroke. This condition is also associated with low blood pressure, hypokalemia, hypoxemia, hypercapnia, and cardiac arrhythmia.
If you are currently using GranuFlo or NaturaLyte and notice any of the following side effects, you could be at risk:
- Skin irritation
- Lung irritation
- Muscle cramps
- Irregular blood pressure
- Irregular heartbeat
